"Please do not retune your device!" Bilsdale transmitter update

Following Tuesday's fire at the Bilsdale transmitting centre, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue say the area around the site remains secure.

Following Tuesday's fire at the Bilsdale transmitting centre, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue say the area around the site remains secure. A 300m exclusion zone is still in place until the site operator can confirm that the tower is structurally secure.

In a statement, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said:

"When the site is safe, we will return for a closer examination. This will allow to positively confirm that the fire has been extinguished and to begin the process of investigating the cause of the fire.

At this time, there is nothing to suggest that the fire is the result of any criminal activity, but this cannot be confirmed until a closer examination has been carried out.

We continue to work with the site operator, Arqiva, to ensure the safety of all those involved in the investigation operation."

Some TV and radio services in Teeside have been restored, but areas around Harrogate and Ripon, in some cases, are still experiencing problems. The message to anyone not receiving television channels or radio stations as normal, is not to retune. On the Freeview website yesterday, the following was published:

"There is continued disruption to services in North East England due to a fire at Bilsdale transmitter.  We are working to restore services as quickly and safely as possible.

Please do not retune your device, services will be restored once the problem has been fixed. We will provide further updates on this article and via our Twitter support account.

We estimate that up to 500,000 homes could be affected by this.

You can watch Freeview on some internet-connected Freeview Play TVs, or one that has the players available to view, you will still be able to watch live and on-demand content from the likes of BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub or All 4."

The transmitter operator, Arquiva, tweeted the following:

"The task to reinstate all the services available from a 1,000ft mast is complex and we are working hard to get services back up as quickly as we can.

The process is a gradual one. We apologise for the inconvenience but ask that you bear with us as our teams work hard to deliver solutions for as many people as possible as quickly and safely as we can."
