North Yorkshire Police launch border patrols to stop people crossing from Tier 3 to Tier 2

North Yorkshire Police are launching border patrols with Automatic Number Plate Recognition to prevent people going from Tier 3 to Tier 2.

North Yorkshire Police are launching border patrols, including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), to prevent people crossing Tier 3 borders into Tier 2. The Police force are using number plate recognition technology to catch out motorists and have warned of 'enforcement action' under public health regulations if people are caught leaving Tier 3 to go to pubs or restaurants. And this could see offenders hit with £200 fines, doubling for further offences up to £6,400. [caption id="attachment_4117" align="aligncenter" width="1351"] North Yorkshire Police are using number plate recognition technology to catch offenders.[/caption] Harrogate and all of North Yorkshire is currently in Tier 2, meaning pubs and restaurants can open with Covid measures in place.

However the county is surrounded by Tier 3 areas, with East Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire all facing stricter restrictions.

Police are concerned people under these tighter measures could be driving over boundaries to go to pubs or restaurants.

Officers have now deployed safety fleet cameras with ANPR across the main routes into the county.
