Name: Birstwith C E Primary School
Location: Birstwith, near Harrogate
Executive Headteacher: Mrs Liz Bedford

Birstwith Church of England Primary School is situated in the heart of the village of Birstwith. We are a warm and welcoming School, very concerned with the welfare and pastoral care of our pupils as well as the academic standards they achieve.

The staff endeavour to bring out the best in each child and have high expectations of pupils in terms of academic progress and behaviour. We welcome children who live within our catchment area but we also have many children in school who live in nearby villages and also in Harrogate.

When Ofsted last visited the school in 2017, they agreed that Birstwith continued to be a Good school. They said:

“Pupils enjoy coming to school. They feel well supported in their learning and proud when their work is celebrated. Parents are positive about the support their children receive.”

Although our school was built in Victorian times, we have added more classrooms over the past 25 years and we now have just under 100 children in the school who are split into four classes. We have wonderful space outside that is used for outdoor learning.

As well as two playground spaces, our big school field is great for PE sessions and means that we have lots of space at playtimes. In the summer term all of our parents are invited to join us for Sports Day. Our children in the Early Years have their own outside classroom and enjoy learning and playing together.

We have use of the nearby woods and everyone in school has the chance to take part in Forest School activities. We collect wood and learn to make fires using a flint and then cook sausages and toast marshmallows.

We build dens and climb trees and enjoy it whatever the weather! We sometimes get muddy but we always have fun.

Parents can leave their children in the knowledge that they will be cared for under one roof until such a time that they can collect them. We are delighted that after such a difficult year, we are all now back in school again.

The children were excited to return to be with their teachers and their friends. We would love to have an opportunity to show you our school – this would have to be out of school hours at the moment. Please contact Mrs Fiona Willetts, the School Administrative Manager, for further information or to make an appointment to visit.
