We caught up with Phil Pearson, owner of White Rose Sewing & Craft Centre, to chat about the 42 years he has been in business, why he likes working and living in Yorkshire and how he helped Harrogate Scrubbers during the first lockdown…

When was the company founded and how has it grown?

My dad initially launched the company back in 1979 when he was made redundant from Singer, so decided to set up his own franchise. I was asked to join him so learnt my trade whilst doing the job and from my father’s expertise.

We initially had a shop in Castleford and then branched out to Otley and Wetherby.  Longer term, we closed the Castleford and Otley branches to focus on opening another store in Harrogate which our business is solely run from now. However, we have kept our clientele from all our previous ventures.

Why do you stand out from your competition?

We have excellent customer service and over 40 years experience in sewing machines which people value and need. We gain new business through word of mouth and have a trusted brand and reputation which we value greatly. It is a third-generation family business – one we are very proud of.

How has Covid affected your business and how did you cope?

The main impact has been losing the trade shows we exhibit at, which we look forward to starting again. We helped the Harrogate Scrubbers in the first lockdown as people were pulling out sewing machines they had rarely used which needed servicing. Others bought new machines so they could join in and we literally went house to house helping people and sourcing and supplying the materials they needed.

Who would you most like to have a drink with and why?

As a huge golf fan I would have loved to have a beer with Seve Ballesteros as he is a hero of mine.  Having been a fan since the 70’s, Elton John and Rod Stewart would be top of my list too.

What advice would you give the next generation starting their careers?

People value old-fashioned service and advice so always focus on being truthful and honest with your customers. No pushy sales, genuine support and you will keep a loyal customer base.

Why do you like doing business in Yorkshire?

Yorkshire folk are honest and friendly and it is where I have lived my whole life. I love the people and I love the scenery.

Name your favourite local business and explain what makes them special?

The Cheeseboard in Harrogate which very handily is the shop next door to us. Like us, they are completely knowledgeable about their products and are passionate about the cheese they serve. Another longstanding local company who have been around for 25yrs.
