A Boroughbridge business owner has created a ‘sunflower walk’ in his 20-acre field in memory of former BBC radio presenter Dom Busby.

David Sowray, who owns The Log Shed, is aiming to raise £40,000 for Dom who died in June from a brain tumour.

Lifelong friend David, who went to school with Dom, is inviting families to the sunflower field whilst donating proceeds to Macmillan Cancer Support and Saint Michael’s Hospice.

David told Your Harrogate:

“It’s a 20-acre field, so it’s 10 acres of sunflowers surrounded by 10 acres of grass for parking.

“I didn’t want to call it a sunflower maze as I wanted it to appeal to everyone, so imagine a walk through the sunflowers, much like a forest walk.

“I’ve cut a track that takes somewhere between half an hour and 50 minutes depending on how long you take to walk through it.”

Former BBC 5 Live presenter Dom passed away in June having been diagnosed with a brain tumour four weeks before.

And after speaking to Dom’s mother Magda at his memorial service, David discovered two charities that were able to help Dom in his final weeks.

The sunflower field opened last week and has already received positive feedback from visitors.

David said:

“The sunflowers are between six and eight feet tall and around 25 per cent of them have flowering at the moment.

“There’s about to be an explosion of colour, it’s just an amazing experience.

“You do something like this and you’re not sure if it’s going to work but people came and spent between two and thee hours with us.

“I feel very heartened and very excited about the next few weeks. It seems to change every day as more flowers come out – its very calm and tranquil in there.”

The field near Boroughbridge also includes a coffee van, vintage taxis and a bouncy castle for the children.

Families can go along from 9am-5pm Tuesday to Sunday. 50% of the £6 entry fee will be split between St Michael’s Hospice and Macmillan.
