Restart a Heart Day 2020: How CPR has changed due to Covid-19

On Restart a Heart Day 2020, we look at the importance of CPR and take a closer look at how methods have changed due to Covid-19 advice.

Today (Friday 16th October) is 'Restart a Heart Day' The annual event aims to teach people how to carry out CPR and how important it is to be prepared. This year, in light of Covid-19 advice, the CPR steps have changed. Today is 'Restart a Heart Day', an annual awareness day to emphasise the importance of CPR to potentially save a life. This year the day is just as important as ever, as the steps required to carry out CPR safely and successfully have changed due to Covid-19 advice. The event involves every ambulance service in the UK, the Resuscitation Council, the British Heart Foundation, British Red Cross and St John Ambulance - and this year, they're asking you to learn and teach yourself CPR digitally via online resources. RCUK have put together a handy video on how to perform CPR during the current global pandemic: https://vimeo.com/452240742 Why should you learn CPR? More than 30,000 people go into cardiac arrests outside of hospital in the UK every year, with the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest dropping 10 per cent a minute if CPR is not started. Out of hospital cardiac arrests are still happening across the UK, and by learning and performing CPR, you could be the difference between life and death for a loved one at home, a colleague at work, or a stranger in the street. To read more about Restart a Heart Day and to see some resources on how to teach yourself CPR, visit the Yorkshire Ambulance Service or the Resuscitation Council websites.
