A special service, led by the Bishop of Leeds, has taken place at Ripon Cathedral to remember the Duke of Edinburgh following his death on Friday at the age of 99.
A special service, led by the Bishop of Leeds, has taken place at Ripon Cathedral to remember the Duke of Edinburgh following his death on Friday at the age of 99. At the 10.30am sung Eucharist yesterday (Sunday), prayers were said for Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family, the bishop also offered a reflection. The service was attended by Earl Peel, representing the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire. Meanwhile, the cathedral will be staying open later until 7pm each day this week until Friday, to allow people to say their own private prayers in memory of Prince Philip. Members of clergy will be on hand and prayer stations are available with social distancing in place for visitors. Floral tributes can be left outside the cathedral. Dean John Dobson from Ripon Cathedral said:
"It was with great sadness and a deep sense of loss that we at Ripon Cathedral learnt of the death of his Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. We reflect on his extraordinary life, of the great courage he showed in his early years, years that shaped him for a life of distinguished service as consort to Her Majesty the Queen. His contribution to the life of this nation, the Commonwealth and the world community is without question. We remember particularly his care for the natural world as President of the World Wildlife Fund and think of the inordinate number of people who have benefitted from the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. "Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with Her Majesty the Queen and her family. We pray for comfort and strength for them. "In this Easter week, we remember the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
