Harrogate's Rotary Wood, a community woodland planted by school children, is set to be cut down to allow for the expansion of a bottled water plant. Both Harrogate Spring Water and Danon, a French food conglomerate, are planning to expand an existing bottled water site onto the adjacent area of woodland in Harrogate. And the plans would see over half of Rotary Wood, which was planted by children from Western Primary School between 2005-2011, make way for the new facility. The public forest, which sits alongside Harrogate's Pinewoods forest, hosts a variety of wildlife including wild orchids. https://twitter.com/PinewoodsHgt/status/1347830511880830976 Harrogate Spring Water was originally granted planning permission to expand the bottling site in 2017 - a decision that was opposed by various green groups. However in 2019, the company, alongside majority stakeholders Danone, submitted a revised application for a site that is around 40% larger. To compensate for cutting down more than half of Rotary Wood, the two companies have offered to replant the trees lost on another site in Harrogate. Harrogate Council will decide on whether to approve Danone and Harrogate Spring Water’s amended planning application later this month. Read more local stories from Your Harrogate here.
