An internationally renowned orchestra will launch Harrogate's Music Festival when it makes its northern debut next month.
Orchestra Chineke! is launching this year’s festival at the Royal Hall, hosted by Harrogate International Festivals, at 7.30pm on Thursday 29th June.
Chineke! is Europe’s first majority black and ethnically diverse orchestra, and has just returned from its hugely successful inaugural tour of North America. The collection of musicians will perform under the baton of Scotland-based American conductor Kellen Gray.
Chineke! is due to return to this year’s BBC Proms in September, but before then Harrogate is the only UK location outside of London with the opportunity to watch the orchestra live.
The programme includes Beethoven’s joyful Fourth Symphony and will showcase music by pioneering Black British composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor.

"We are thrilled to have Chineke! launching this year’s Summer Festival. Harrogate’s audience will be able to get the Prom’s experience without needing to travel all the way to London, so this is a fantastic opportunity for the North.
"After the pandemic we hope that audiences will return to experiencing live orchestral music from international artists at the Royal Hall.
"This awe-inspiring ensemble is set to deliver an incredible performance at our grand opening – it is one not to miss!"
Harrogate Music Festival, will take place across three long weekends, beginning on the 29th June with a Grand Opening Concert at the Royal Hall.
Each weekend features a series of carefully curated performances of classical, chamber and jazz music that celebrate the history and legacy of the Festival – now in its 58th year.
Other highlights this year include a return from young musician alumni Julian Lloyd Webber, Festival legends Oddsocks, Guest Curator pianist Robin Green, and Mike Lovatt who will premiere his brand-new project the Brass Pack.
