Another heatwave is set to hit Harrogate this week – and residents are being urged to avoid having barbecues.

Although temperatures won’t reach the record-breaking heat of last month, Harrogate will still see highs of around 29 degrees on Friday and Saturday.

And people across the country are being urged not to host barbecues due to fears of “large-scale” fires in parched areas.

The A61 near Ripon experienced a large-scale field fire last month during hot temperatures, prompting dozens of firefighters into action.

The fire on 11th July affected a wide area near the A61 at Hutton Bank, with police warning motorists to avoid the area.

Ian Simpson, Netweather.tv forecaster said:

“Most parts of England and Wales will see no rain at all during the coming week, exacerbating problems with water shortages and risk of fires breaking out due to the dry ground.

“Night time temperatures will remain relatively low with clear skies and light winds, except in urban centres, particularly in London, where they will be hot and uncomfortable for many.”

Tips for hot weather

North Yorkshire County Council have given the following tips for residents during the hot weather:

  • look out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated – older people, those with underlying health conditions and those who live alone are particularly at risk
  • stay cool indoors – many of us will need to stay safe at home this summer so know how to keep your home cool
  • close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors
  • drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol
  • never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals
  • try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm
  • walk in the shade, apply sunscreen regularly and wear a wide brimmed hat, if you have to go out in the heat
  • avoid exercising in the hottest parts of the day
  • make sure you take water with you, if you are travelling
  • if you are going into open water to cool down, take care and follow safety advice
