Harrogate Borough Council is calling for Knaresborough residents to have their say on a new leisure and wellness centre in the town.

The proposals reveal a new facility that will replace the “ageing” Knaresborough Pool in Spring 2023.

Working through Brimhams Active, their new dedicated subsidiary, Harrogate Borough Council are looking to ‘meet the needs of the community.’

The new facility will provide a six-lane 25metre pool, learner pool with flume, sauna and steam room, fitness suite and studio, spin studio, café as well as electric car charging points, bicycle storage and large play area.

Councillor Stanley Lumley, Harrogate Borough Council’s cabinet member for culture, tourism and sport, and chair of the board of directors at Brimhams Active, said:

“We have ambitious plans to reduce the proportion of the population that are physically inactive but we can’t do this without investing in our facilities.

“This multi-million pound investment for Knaresborough will create a 21st century facility that provides fantastic opportunities for local people to move more, live well and feel great.

“Along with our new facility in Ripon and the redevelopment of the Hydro in Harrogate, as well as the districts other great leisure centres and pools, I hope people feel motivated, supported and inspired to stay active.”

The new leisure and wellness centre comes following approval from Harrogate Borough Council to develop plans to provide new leisure facilities in both Knaresborough and at the Hydro in Harrogate.

A consultation at the end of last year concluded that the existing location was the preferred site for the new facility.

Mark Tweedie, managing director of Brimhams Active, said:

“Through the provision of fantastic modern leisure and wellness facilities and engaging, inclusive services we will be able to help many more people become active, lead healthier lifestyles and therefore live longer, more independent and happier lives.”

“This is a really exciting time for leisure, health and wellbeing in the Harrogate district which is thanks to the bold and brave vision of Harrogate Borough Council and their commitment to unprecedented levels of investment.”

James Foley, commercial director for Alliance Leisure Services, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to be supporting the council and Brimhams Active.

“The proposed transformation for Knaresborough has the capability to create a hugely positive impact within the community for generations to come.”

Residents can share their views online at: https://dppukltd.com/Knaresborough from today (30th September) until Sunday 24th October.

A public engagement session will also be held next Wednesday (6th October) between 5pm and 8pm at Knaresborough Swimming Pool where residents can ask questions about the proposals.
