Coppice Valley Primary School have received the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools gold award.
Coppice Valley Primary School has been recognised for its hard work around children's mental health with a gold award from the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools. The award was established in 2017 and aims to strengthen pupils’ mental health by supporting schools to make a positive change at all levels of the UK's education system. And, following a lengthy application process, Coppice Valley have been given the centre's gold award in what Headteacher Emma Meadus describes as a "celebration" of their work around mental health. Mrs Meadus said:
"It's something we've been doing for a long time and the last 4 or 5 years it's definitely been a priority for us. "It's been amazing but it's not been the case we've gone for this award just to win an award, it's been to highlight and celebrate that part of teaching that we have."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cR8p9K1iGP8 Pupil Wellbeing Support Sam Wright, who helps children with PSHE and mental health classes throughout the school, said:
"We're super proud of all the work we've done in school throughout the last few years, and we've been working towards this award for the past year.
"The basis of it is for children to understand what mental health is and how important it is, and that they can confidently ask for help and talk about their own mental health and wellbeing. "It's also getting them to talk about their feelings and understanding that having a range of feelings is absolutely normal."The school aims to provide different strategies to help the children work through feelings of stress and anxiety, including breathing exercises and meditation. And Sam believes that Coppice Valley have been so successful in their work around mental health due to the support from parents:
"The parents have been really supportive and I think it's really helped us that parents know they can approach us about wellbeing and mental health. We work together to support the children and share resources and ideas, so it's a real community approach."Coppice Valley Primary School currently have around 60 children of key workers being taught within school, with others learning remotely.
