Harrogate DJ to stream 'Vanaoke' event to raise money for charity

Harrogate mobile DJ Jason Dobson is set to hold 'Vanaoke' - a virtual karaoke event from his van to raise money for charity.

A Harrogate mobile DJ is set to hold a virtual karaoke event from his van to raise money for charity. Jason Dobson started 'Vanaoke' - socially distanced karaoke from his van - during lockdown and has already seen the idea take off, with thousands tuning in to watch online. The DJ has been streaming his Vanaoke events using his own audio equipment and has already raised over £500 for Yorkshire Cancer Research. And tonight Jason is gearing up for another event as he is set to go live on his Facebook page at 7:30pm with five others, as they plan to perform a Country Music Special Vanaoke outside. Jason said:

"As a lover of music, especially live music, I wanted to have fun and entertain people during these strange times. I have some decent audio equipment that I use for my DJ hobby, so thought I could do something online."
Due to the fact that he is unable to use the music on social media due to copyright, Jason was keen to get people involved singing with karaoke backing tracks. He added:
"The whole thing was pretty popular! After getting more than 6,000 views at one event, I thought I could use this to raise money for charity. "We did a couple of socially distant shows from Stump Cross Caverns and The Beauty Boutique in Pateley Bridge to try help them too! We've made over £500 for Yorkshire Cancer Research on JustGiving over a few shows."
Live music fan Jason also donned a Santa suit at Christmas to provide socially distanced festive karaoke sessions in memory of his mother-in-law, Elaine Fox. After visiting four different Nidderdale villages with his family and friends, Jason was able to raise another £260 for Cancer Research:
"I had an idea to get dressed up as Santa on Christmas Eve and go round four village greens with my family, along with a screen and projector, and blast out some Christmas songs! "I then got up a special guest at each venue to sing a couple, also my daughter did a great rendition of Little Donkey with my son beatboxing along, then audience participation for some traditional carols to finish!"
Jason has added mental health charity MIND to his list of supported charities as he continues to host his Vanaoke fundraising events. Tune in tonight at 7:30pm via Facebook - with the show uploaded to Jason's new YouTube Channel thereafter. Read more local stories from Your Harrogate here.
