Harrogate Town were beaten 2 nil by Port Vale in their League Two match at the EnviroVent stadium on Easter Monday.

But while it wasn’t the result Town were looking, the game will go down in history.

It was the first match in the EFL ever where a female referee was appointed to oversee the game.

37 year old Rebecca Welch, from Washington in the north east of England, had the honour of being the ‘woman in the middle’.

Despite the match not going Town’s way, Harrogate boss Simon Weaver praised Rebecca’s performance.

He said:

“I think she was very good indeed. Important calls were made throughout and they were the right calls.

“Hopefully it’s just par for the course that we see female referees and officials in the EFL. It’s about time”
