Coronavirus: Testing at Harrogate school clears 1,700 mark

Harrogate High School has now carried out more than 1,700 tests as part of their mass asymptomatic testing programme.

A harrogate secondary school has now carried out more than 1,700 tests as part of their mass asymptomatic testing programme. Harrogate High School, which is part of Northern Star Academies Trust, saw more than 86% of students opt into the programme with support from parents and guardians. And within the first two weeks of the school reopening, pupils consenting to participate in the voluntary programme undertook three Covid-19 lateral flow device tests, carried out 3-5 days apart.

Charlotte Clarke, Headteacher at Harrogate High School, said:

"This was a completely new experience for everyone in our school community. The logistical challenges to ensure the site was compliant, staff trained to the required standards and, most importantly, to ensure that our students were supported in the adapted school environment, were our top priorities.

"Our students have been wonderful. Their positive attitude to adopting this programme and the excellent conduct that they have shown throughout this process is admirable."

Volunteer Andrew Cockroft, one of many who supported Harrogate High's testing programme, said:

"It was really impressive to see what the school was doing to protect pupils, staff and all their families.

"We know how challenging it has been for schools during the pandemic and so it was great to have the opportunity to offer some help."

Students who chose to participate in the asymptomatic testing scheme will now transition to using home test kits twice a week, which will be distributed through school.

Households and bubbles of school staff and pupils are now also eligible for twice weekly home asymptomatic testing and information where kits can be obtained from can be found here.
