A Harrogate charity’s pioneering ‘Smart Learning School’ will continue after funding comes to an end this month. Disability Action Yorkshire secured a £23,000 grant from the National Lottery to create a new, six-month post to develop and deliver the inspiring and educational learning tool for disabled people within the Harrogate District. Such has been its success with more than two-dozen pupils accessing the provision - and with enquiries coming in from across the UK - the charity will not only keep it open, but will widen its access to disabled learners countrywide. Jackie Snape, Disability Action Yorkshire Chief Executive, said:
“Our Smart Learning School was only made possible thanks to the Government’s Coronavirus Community Support Fund. “This helped us pay for a learning co-ordinator for an initial six-month contract, who has created a tailor-made distant learning programme for us. Harriet Walker has done a fantastic job, and I’m delighted to say that after the funding comes to an end on March 31, the doors to our Smart Learning School will remain fully open. “Additionally, the initial funding limited us to only taking on learners from the Harrogate District. From April, we can open it up too disabled learners from across the country, which is a very exciting prospect for us. “We have already been contacted by a national charity keen to work with us, and we will now be in a position to pursue this partnership. “More than two dozen local disabled people are already benefitting from our Smart Learning School, and from April we will be in a position to enrol disabled people from all over the UK.”Subjects and courses available via Disability Action Yorkshire’s smart learning school include functional skills, maths, English, accredited employability courses, personal social development, and life skills. This resource for those wanting to learn and develop new skills, which is free, is also offering a number of short courses in vocational areas such as gardening, hair & beauty and hospitality. Disability Action Yorkshire’s Smart Learning School is open to disabled people aged 16, who are looking to gain help and support with developing their skills and have access to an internet-enabled device.
