Accessibility the focus for Harrogate's retail and hospitality sectors

Access, accessibility and the ‘Purple Pound’ will be examined at Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce’s October meeting.

Access, accessibility and the ‘Purple Pound’ will be examined at Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce’s October meeting. Jackie Snape and Josh McCormack, both from Disability Action Yorkshire, will be speaking about their work in helping businesses in the retail and hospitality sector become more accessible. Sue Kramer from Crown Jewellers will speak about Commercial Street’s drive to become the most accessible and welcoming in Harrogate town centre. The meeting is being held at Ashville College, Green Lane, on Monday 11th October 11. Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce President Martin Gerrard said:

“The overriding theme for October’s meeting is access and accessibility. We are looking forward to hearing from our speakers from Disability Action Yorkshire, and Crown Jewellers, how improving access and accessibility makes perfect business sense. “We will hear how the charity has been working with retailers on Commercial Street keen to unlock the ‘Purple Pound’. This term refers to the spending power of disabled households and is said to worth around £249bn to the economy.”

Mr Gerrard added:

“We are also delighted to welcome Ashville College as our newest member, and thank them for hosting this, their inaugural meeting of Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce. “We are grateful to all our ‘host’ members, who not only provide a meeting room, but refreshments for our members, speakers and visitors. Without them it would not possible for us stage our regular meetings.”
