The London sides, Chelsea and Arsenal, along with the two Manchester clubs, have been the most successful in the last thirty years, but there are many other historically competitive teams.
Up in Yorkshire, several clubs have won major trophies prior to the EPL era, and for football followers in the county, there is much to enjoy.
Leeds United
Over the course of their history, Leeds United have become the most successful team in Yorkshire. Anyone seeking football betting tips would have taken great interest in the Don Revie-era Leeds team of the 1970s, when the club were at their peak.
During the decade, Leeds United sides won three major trophies, with the highlight coming in 1973/74 as the club claimed the First Division Championship. In total, Leeds have won three topflight titles, but further success in the FA Cup and in Europe makes this club the most successful in Yorkshire.
Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield Town have briefly played in the Premier League, but the team’s most successful period came around a century ago. They were the team of the 1920s, and all five of their major trophy wins came in this decade.
Huddersfield’s most notable triumph was to win the First Division title in three consecutive seasons between 1924 and 1926. In 1922, the club won both the FA Cup and the Charity Shield. The Terriers were managed during this period by the great Herbert Chapman, who went on to enjoy even more success at Arsenal.
Recent years have seen more modest results, but Huddersfield Town supporters are rightly proud of their superb history.
Sheffield Wednesday
The city of Sheffield boats two professional football teams, but only one can claim as many as nine major English domestic trophies. Sheffield Wednesday have won more first division titles than Leeds United with four topflight victories between 1903 and 1930.
Wednesday also became the first Yorkshire side to win a major trophy when they claimed the FA Cup in 1896.
A more recent Sheffield Wednesday team entertained football fans in the early days of the Premier League. The Owls featured world class players including Chris Waddle, David Hirst, Chris Woods and Viv Anderson as they reached the 1993 FA Cup final.
Two years earlier, Wednesday claimed their most recent major trophy, with victory in the 1991 EFL Cup.
Sheffield United
Sheffield United were Yorkshire’s only Premier League representative across the 2023/24 English football season. Relegation back to the Championship seemed inevitable for much of that campaign, but the Blades are another club with a rich history.
In fact, Sheffield United became the second club from Yorkshire to win a major trophy when they claimed the FA Cup title way back in 1889. Before the century was out, the Blades had added a First Division title, and they remained strong in the early 1900s.
In total, Sheffield United can boast four FA Cup wins with the most recent of these coming in 1925. They are typical of many Yorkshire clubs as a team with great success historically, while more recent campaigns have been less productive.
Rotherham United
An unhappy season for Rotherham United in 2023/24 ended with relegation from the Championship, but history suggests that the Millers will bounce back. The club isn’t familiar with topflight English football, but Rotherham have won several titles at lower levels.
Rotherham United’s earliest success came in 1946 when they won the Third Division North Cup. They’ve also claimed two Third Division Trophy titles, while the club’s most recent triumph saw them lift the Football League Trophy in 1996.
York City
It wouldn’t be right to leave out the county town. York City were formed in 1922, and the club has enjoyed an eventful history. The 1923/24 season saw them compete in non-league football, but York have previously played professionally, and the aim is to get back into their fourth tier.
York City have experienced moderate success, but their modest haul of trophies means a lot to the fans. The Minstermen’s first significant trophy came in the 1983/84 campaign when they won the fourth division championship. York have also won the FA Trophy twice, in 2012 and 2017.
Another proud achievement saw York City reach the FA Cup semifinal in 1955, when they were defeated by eventual winners Newcastle United.
Football in Yorkshire isn’t enjoying its strongest period right now. The 2023/24 season saw only one club competing in the Premier League, and Sheffield United spent the entire campaign battling relegation.
As we have seen, the history of football clubs in the county is far more successful than the current picture suggests. Hopefully it won’t be too long before Yorkshire football teams are competing for major honours once again.
