Free wheelchair rugby league taster sessions are taking place in Harrogate every week throughout October.
Wheelchair rugby league arrives in Harrogate Free wheelchair rugby league taster sessions have arrived in Harrogate. Organised by York RLFC, free sessions are being held every Monday throughout October for both wheelchair athletes and non-disabled players. The first took place on Monday (2nd October) at Harrogate High School, with further sessions scheduled for 9th, 16th and 23rd October from 6pm until 7pm. All sessions are ‘turn up and play’ with no advanced booking necessary. A spokesperson for York RLFC said:
“Wheelchair Rugby League is the most inclusive and accessible variant of rugby league for all abilities. It is the only rugby league offer that is wholly inclusive and teams feature wheelchair athletes and non-disabled players. “Clubs across the UK have been set up to improve the physical well-being of players to enjoy this sport, offering an opportunity for individuals who are either unable or no desire to participate in the running game."The spokesperson added:
“The sport is quite unique in that it offers both disabled and non-disabled players the opportunity to compete both with and against each other. “So, no matter what gender or age players are, everyone compete on a level playing field which is created by the use of wheelchairs and some slight adaptations of the rules of rugby league.”Despite only coming together less than 12 months ago, the York RLFC team completed nearly a dozen fixtures in their debut season. The team finished in second place in the RFL's Wheelchair Rugby League North Division.
