Two Harrogate swimmers poised for national success Two teenage swimmers from a Harrogate school could be in the fast lane to success after securing places in the same national competition. Ashville College pupils 16-year-old Jacob Brown and Amelia Wright, 13, will contest more than one class at the Swim England National County Team Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. It's being held between December 14th and 17th. For Jacob, it’s a new chance to show his skills after missing out on both regional and county meets through illness earlier this year. However, in 2023, he has still managed to make the finals at an international event in Loughborough and won the 50m backstroke race in a category open to swimmers of all ages. He’ll contest the medals in 50m and 100m backstroke; 50m and 100m freestyle; 50m and 100m butterfly; 100m breaststroke and the 200m and 400m individual medley. He said:
"I am so happy to be competing and representing my school and Tadcaster Swimming Club on the big stage."Meanwhile Amelia will contest the 50m and 100m freestyle hoping to add to gold medals she won at the Yorkshire championships and North East regional finals earlier this year. Amelia also holds the North East regional silver medal for 100m freestyle, 100 and 50m butterfly and the bronze for the individual medley. She said:
"I’m very happy to be competing and representing Harrogate District Swimming Club and Ashville at such a big event."Swimming coach Corrinne Dixon said both pupils’ success has been the result of their commitment and some hard work in training. She said:
“I've only been in the role here at Ashville since September, but we have been doing a lot of work with the swimmers in a short space of time. “We’ve also added extra co-curricular training nights for both prep and seniors as they were fully subscribed. “Ashville has a lot of talented young people coming right through from Prep School and Senior School so hopefully the future looks bright for swimming at Ashville.”Read more local stories from Your Harrogate here.
