The William Hill Great St. Wilfrid Handicap Stakes, Ripon’s most iconic race, takes pride of place at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse on Saturday.
TV cameras to descend on Ripon Races with £200,000 prize up for grabs The William Hill Great St. Wilfrid Handicap Stakes, Ripon’s most iconic race, will take place at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse on Saturday (19th August). The ITV4 cameras will be present for Ripon’s most valuable ever raceday with over £200,000 in prize money up for grabs and the historic £100,000 six-furlong Handicap taking centre stage. The Great St Wilfrid has now been sponsored by William Hill for 30 years - their longest standing sports sponsorship - and the race has attracted 28 entries ahead of declaration stage. The race promises to be a wide open heat and the sponsors have installed Summerghand, fourth in the 2022 renewal, as the 7/1 favourite. David O’Meara, Trainer of Summerghand, said:
“We’re really looking forward to the race. He ran well in the race last year but was drawn on the wrong side. "He is in really good form and he likes Ripon so fingers crossed for a nice draw and we’re very hopeful of a good run."Daryl West, Head of Sponsorship, Social Media and PR at 888 William Hill, said:
“We’re delighted to be back as sponsors of the historic William Hill Great St Wilfrid for the 30th consecutive year and always look forward to a wide-open contest. "Our sponsorship started with a 20/1 winner in 1994 and we’ve seen seventeen further winners at double-figure prices. “In fact, the shortest price winner in that spell was 7/2, so here’s to another great each-way betting heat for the most valuable race of the year at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse”.James Hutchinson, Managing Director and Clerk of the Course said:
"William Hill Great St Wilfrid day is always an occasion we really look forward to. We’re immensely proud to be William Hill’s longest standing sports sponsorship and we’re delighted with the quality of entries for the big race. "It's been thirteen years since we last saw the trophy head south of Yorkshire and with a very strong contingent from Yorkshire and the North it would be no surprise if that extended to fourteen on Saturday."The first race will start at 1:35pm with entry from 11.15am. Racegoers can gain entry from just £8 per person to the Course Enclosure with free entry for accompanied Under 18’s into all enclosures. Find out more and book online here.
