Storm Bert brings snow disruption

A snowy scene in Harrogate

Amber and yellow weather warnings are currently in place as storm Bert sweeps in across the region.

Heavy snow is causing disruption to travel and the area's attractions, but is rapidly expected to turn to sleet and rain as the day progresses.

The Harrogate Bus Company has suspended all services and delays are expected on local train services.

The storm is also bringing wind gusts of in excess of 40MPH for a short period of time of Saturday (23rd November) and with snow expected to turn to rain as the storm sweeps through, flooding is also likely to be an issue.

Leeds Bradford Airport had to close the runway for a short period, but is now operating as normal and plenty of local sporting fixtures are also expected to be affected by the bad weather. Both Harrogate Railway and Knaresborough Town have postponed matches.

RHS Garden Harlow Carr is continuing with "Glow" as planned, but the gardens are closed for the day.

Whilst a comment on Fountain's Abbey social media reads:

Following the heavy snow and freezing temperatures, Fountains Abbey will be closed today (Saturday 23 November) for the safety of visitors and staff. Once the snow clears we'll be working hard to grit the paths and make sure the site is safe to open tomorrow.

North Yorkshire Police have been kept busy with several incidents on the area's roads too.

It's looking beautiful out here ⛄ But unfortunately it's not looking so good on our roads, where we've already dealt...
