Rising British artist to launch show after year long residency at Thorp Perrow Arboretum

Rebecca's previous work.

This summer, 108 Fine Art Harrogate presents a Solo Exhibition by rising British painter Rebecca Styles.

The show is the result of Rebecca’s year-long residency at Thorp Perrow Arboretum in North Yorkshire and documents the beauty of its 100 acres of parkland throughout the seasons.

Rebecca’s collection of forty works responds to Thorp Perrow’s spectacular variety of plants and trees, which includes five National Plant Collections, as the seasons change from spring and summer through to autumn and winter.

Lady Natasha Ropner of Thorp Perrow says:

“This is our first art residency at Thorp Perrow, and we are delighted to be working with an artist with such an intimate connection to the British landscape.

"The Arboretum is incredibly beautiful, and holds such important collections, so we are excited to see it documented and celebrated in Rebecca’s work.”

Rebecca Styles says:

“Part of the joy of this project was walking in the footsteps of artists like Constable, Monet, or more recently Cecily Brown, and their paintings of stately homes and beautiful gardens.

"The subject matter at Thorp Perrow demanded a distinctly different colour palette, so I looked often to the work of Claude Monet throughout the project and found his use of colour and ways of rendering natural form a great inspiration.”

Using natural materials, Rachel explores a deeper connection to ‘place’ in her work with an emphasis on creating landscape with landscape – using local earth pigments, grit, charcoal and other found materials to create her oil paints.

Rebecca is a recipient of a Visual Artist and Craft Makers Award and a Creative Scotland Artist Bursary for her work involving raw pigments and traditional paint making.

She has spent recent years exploring some of the UK’s most beautiful locations, collecting foraged materials for use in her paintings.

The exhibition can be seen from 2 pm to 4pm on Saturday 21st June.

It will be attended by Sir Henry and Lady Natasha Ropner of Thorp Perrow Arboretum
