Popular children’s book The Gruffalo will be brought to life in an upcoming show at Harrogate Theatre.
Popular children's book to come to life at Harrogate Theatre A popular children’s book will be brought to life in a show coming to Harrogate Theatre. The Theatre, fresh from its critically-acclaimed pantomime of Dick Whittington, has announced its spring season, featuring a variety of comedy, music, drama and children’s shows. And The Gruffalo’s Child will be coming to the Theatre on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th January. The show is based on the much-loved picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. A preview for the show reads:
“One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s Child ignores her father’s warnings about the Big Bad Mouse and tiptoes out into the deep dark wood. “She follows snowy tracks and encounters mysterious creatures–but the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist… does he? “Let your imagination run wild with songs, laughs and scary fun for everyone aged 3 to 103.”Comedy Harrogate Theatre always brings a wide range of comedy, and the 2024 spring season is no exception. Among the comedy acts will be Stewart Lee (Tue 20 – Wed 21 Feb), Frankie Boyle (Thu 29 Feb) and Ed Byrne (Sun 03 Mar), as well as Sophie McCartney, (Sun 10 Mar) and Domy Joly (Wed 27 Mar). Buddy Holly and the Cricketers (Sat 03 Feb), Fairport Convention (Fri 01 Mar) and Pasadena Roof Orchestra (Fri 15 Mar) are back due to popular demand too. Drama and storytelling Spring will bring a range of drama and storytelling to Harrogate Theatre. Black Eyed Theatre will present the 60th Anniversary tour of Oh What A Lovely War (Thu 22 – Sat 24 Feb), which has received a huge amount of 5 star reviews and critical acclaim. Fuel Theatre, in association with Northern stage and the National Theatre of Scotland, bring Protest, (Fri 09 – Sat 10 Feb) a new play for ages 7+ and their families. This year’s Assistant Director and Understudy of Dick Whittington brings Fat Chance (Fri 15 Mar) to the studio, a show exploring her true-life experience of weight gain from size 8 to 18. And for those after something spooky, Casting the Runes (Wed 14 Feb) is a chilling new adaptation of M.R. James’ classic ghost stories, and Adam Robinson returns with three tales of terror in Unhomely (Wed 10 – Sat 13 Apr). Children’s shows After a successful launch in 2022, the Little Stages Festival will return with a brand new set of shows introducing the magic of theatre to children, sponsored by us at Your Harrogate. The line up will include Alice in Wonderland (Wed 14 Feb), Dear Zoo (Wed 27 – Thu 28 Mar), Sooty: The 75th Birthday Spectacular (Sat 30 Mar) and Northern Ballet’s The Tortoise and the Hare (Sat 06 Apr). Harrogate Youth Theatre will also be taking to the main stage to present their adaptations of Dracula: The Bloody Truth (Tue 05 Mar) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Thu 07 Mar). Harrogate Dramatic Society present The Mother (Zeller) (Wed 14 – Sat 17 Feb) and The Mechanicals (Wed 24 Apr – Sat 27 Apr) whilst The Harrogate Pheonix Players present The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Wed 20 – Sat 23 Mar) and RAOS Musical Theatre Company performs Sister Act The Musical (Wed 17 – Sat 20 Apr).
