Knaresborough's Lauren Doherty BEM BCAv has been sharing her road safety message with local pupils as part of Brake's National Road Safety Week.
Lauren visited Starbeck Primary School yesterday (Tuesday) to give a presentation on the dangers roads can pose.
She herself suffered a serious incident in 2008, which left her paralysed and needing two carers at all times.
However, through ‘Road Safety Talks’, Lauren has been sharing her story and encouraging children to think about road safety for the last eight years.
Lauren and her colleague Rebecca Blunstone were joined by Your Harrogate’s Nick Hancock, who interviewed pupils after the presentation.
9-year-old Bronte said:
“Lauren told us lots about road safety and how to be safe on and around roads.”
10-year-old Ava said:
“We’ve learnt how to cross the road safely without looking at our phones and getting distracted.
“I’m going to share the message with my family and friends outside of school.”
8-year-old Mira said:
“I think you should always look left and right before you cross the road and look for the nearest crossing.”
Brake’s National Road Safety Week is a road safety campaign that takes place annually and is organised by the road safety charity Brake.
The week is running from 17th until 23rd November, beginning on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
The theme for 2024 is "After the Crash – Every road victim counts.”
