Claro Hill vets warn of dangers of heatstroke in dogs

Claro Hill Vets are warning dog owners about heatstroke.

A Harrogate vet has warned dog owners to be aware of the dangers of heatstroke for their pets.

Heatstroke can affect dogs when their temperature rises above 40 degrees.

And with temperatures soaring in the Harrogate district, the team at Claro Hill Vets are handing out advice…

What is Heatstroke?

Heatstroke is an extremely dangerous condition that can occur if your pet gets too hot.

Normal body temperature for a dog is between 38-39°C but when your dogs temperature goes above 40°C they are at risk of heatstroke.

This can cause seizures, organ damage, internal bleeding, coma and even death.

Heatstroke is more dangerous the longer it lasts, so the quicker your dog is cooled down and treated by a vet, the better their chance of a full recovery.

Causes of Heatstroke

Dogs have limited ability to sweat, so instead, they pant and use shade to cool themselves down on warm days.

However, dogs also love to run and play, which is why nearly three quarters of heatstroke cases develop while playing and exercising.

It can also be caused by simply sitting somewhere too warm, or being trapped somewhere hot, for example a car, conservatory or room without proper ventilation.

Any dog can develop heatstroke, but flat-faced, thick-coated, overweight, giant-breed, very old and very young dogs are most at risk.

Signs of Heatstroke

  • Rapid breathing
  • Drooling or vomiting
  • Hot to touch
  • Unsteady on their feet
  • Collapse
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness
  • Bright red gums
  • Racing heart

First aid treatment of Heatstroke

  • Seek veterinary attention as soon as possible
  • Move your pet to a cool and shaded area
  • Allow them to take small sips of cool water
  • Pour cool (not cold) water on them
  • Lie them on a cool matt or wet towel
  • Use fans in the house or air-con in the car while you travel to the vets

How to avoid Heatstroke

  • Keep your pet indoors on warm days
  • Do not leave your pet in the car or conservatory
  • Ensure access to fresh water you can even add ice cubes
  • Take water on walks
  • Avoid pavements as they can burn your pets paws
  • Avoid exercise in the heat of the day, go out early or later when it is cooler.

If you are concerned your pet has heatstroke, call Claro Hill Vets on 01423 228080 and set off to the surgery.
