Harrogate restaurants still best in Yorkshire for food hygiene Restaurants, takeaways and other food establishments in Harrogate have once again ranked highest for food hygiene in Yorkshire, according to research. The report was carried out by Ilkley-based training provider High Speed Training, who analysed Food Standards Agency (FSA) data for over 218,000 food businesses across the UK. And Harrogate came out on top, with an average score of 4.79 out of 5 from over 300 premises. This places Harrogate 8th in the national rankings for towns and cities. Harrogate also topped the national rankings in a 2019 survey, and improved its rating by 0.07 points from last year’s report. [caption id="attachment_68852" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Harrogate has once again been named the best place in Yorkshire for food hygiene.[/caption] Overall, Yorkshire ranked highest in the regions category with an average score of 4.53 across 11,000 premises. Ripon also received a special mention for increasing its rating to 4.72 - an increase of 0.11 from last year and the largest improvement on the list. Paul Turner CEnvH, MCIEH, Senior Environmental Health Officer, North Yorkshire Council, said:

“The results that High Speed Training have found are encouraging, with 87% of premises across the UK  scoring a 4 or 5, but there are always improvements that can be made. "Robust food management systems, regular maintenance of the premises and correct and proper training are all needed to ensure that businesses can provide the best and most hygienic service to their customers."
The lowest average rating in the region went to Halifax, with an average score of 4.20 from over 400 premises, placing them in the bottom 6 of the national rankings. All three cities increased their ratings from 2022. Dr Richard Anderson, Head of Learning and Development at High Speed Training said:
"Our report shows that, on average, standards remain high across the UK, and have slightly improved from 2022. “Correct food hygiene training for staff, alongside robust food management procedures and everyday good practices are crucial to keep performing at high standards. “And for those customers turning a blind eye when it comes to checking a hygiene rating, we would definitely urge you not to as ignorance isn’t always bliss!"
The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) is a partnership with local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The scheme aims to provide customers with information as to how well a business is upholding food hygiene and safety standards. To view the report in full click here.
