A primary school in the Harrogate area is all set to take on the Great Knaresborough Bed Race - and with a special cause in mind.
Staff and parents from All Saints Primary School will be hitting the streets of Knaresborough this Saturday (8th June) for the gruelling 2.4-mile course.
And they’re doing it whilst fundraising for Candlelighters - a charity that have provided crucial support for a former pupil diagnosed with bone cancer.
Candlelighters have been there for Sam, who was at All Saints between 2010 and 2017, following his diagnosis last summer.
All Saints hope to raise £2,000 for the charity.
Sam said:
“I have had to spend a lot of time in hospital. So far, I have spent 216 days and 108 nights in hospital. This was scary but also very boring.
“While I was in hospital, Candlelighters helped me to feel more comfortable and a lot less scared.
“They are also always there when I wanted to talk to about how I was feeling. Cancer is quite scary so having someone to talk to is really important.”
Candlelighters, who have also supported three other former All Saints pupils, continue to play an important role in Sam's battle with cancer.
Sam has been learning how to play guitar after being taught by Ryan - a member of Candlelighters staff.
He said:
“Ryan thought this looked like something I would enjoy so he taught me how to play. This gave me something to focus on while I was in hospital.
“This made the time pass much quicker and it also meant that I had something to focus my mind on rather than worrying about the cancer. I still play the guitar now.
“This has been the most important thing to me on my journey through cancer. It has got me through all those days and nights in hospital.”
Sam will soon be heading to Birmingham for his next operation as he continues his battle with bone cancer.
