Harrogate fundraisers conquer Mount Kilimanjaro for local care charity

Steve McCready and Pete Gawtry have reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

A daring duo from Harrogate have conquered Mount Kilimanjaro whilst fundraising for a local care charity.

57-year-old Steve McCready and 51-year-old Pete Gawtry reached the mountain’s summit last week, having scaled more than 19,300 vertical feet.

They’ve been fundraising for Harrogate Neighbours, a charity which supports older and vulnerable people.

The pair have raised £5,600 towards their target of £19,340 - £1 for every vertical foot they have climbed.

A spokesperson for Harrogate Neighbours said:

“We couldn’t be prouder of their achievement.

“Pete and Steve decided to undertake this mission to honour the memories of their parents, who were inspirations to them both.

“Now that we have heard from them we can all heave a collective sigh of relief, open up our wallets, and make a donation to show how much we appreciate their efforts!”

Speaking about their reasons for taking on the challenge, both Steve and Pete praised the word Harrogate Neighbours do in the community.

Pete said:

“I lost my dad last year and I wanted to do something to honour his memory - he was such an important figure and role model in my life.

“However, I am terrified of heights so alongside the physically challenge ahead, it’ll also be a mental one for me to overcome.”

Steve said:

“I lost my mum last year – she was the matriarch to our large family and her absence has been really felt – particularly over the Christmas period.

“Harrogate Neighbours move mountains for people like my mum and Pete’s dad everyday and we hope to make lots of money for such a worthy cause.”
