Pupils from a Harrogate district primary school are backing a local man’s mission to sail around the world in a record-breaking race.
Birstwith pupils get behind local man’s record-breaking race around the world Pupils from a Harrogate district primary school are backing a local man’s mission to sail around the world in a record-breaking race. Sean McPartland will take on the 'Clipper Round The World Race' next month - a 40,000 nautical mile trip on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht. And pupils from Birstwith CE Primary School, the village where Sean is from, will be with him every step of the way. The children gave Sean their school mascot, ‘Bertie the Birstwith Bear’, and will be following his journey as he travels across the globe. Mrs Erwin, a Teacher at Birstwith School, said:
“The children will be tracking his journey using a world map and are excited to see pictures from his travels. “It's a wonderful experience for the children of Birstwith CE School to become inspired to take on challenges beyond their wildest dreams, be brave and dare to dream!”Sean will be taking on the challenge with no previous sailing experience. Clipper Race The Clipper Race is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world and an endurance test like no other. The route is divided into eight legs and between 13 and 16 individual races including six ocean crossings. You can choose to complete the full circumnavigation or select one or multiple legs. [caption id="attachment_73767" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] The Clipper Race around the world.[/caption] The brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world, the first Clipper Race took place in 1996. Since then, almost 6,000 Race Crew from all walks of life and more than 60 nations have trained and raced in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. The route of each edition of the race is unique, often formed by Host Ports around the globe. In the race’s twenty five year history, more than fifty cities have played host to the Clipper Race.
