Harrogate youth group targets notoriously littered area for community clean up

A Harrogate youth group from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has targeted an area behind a local school for a community litter pick.

A Harrogate youth group has targeted an area behind a local school for a community litter pick. The area that runs behind Woodfield Primary School in Harrogate is notoriously targeted by litterers - despite regularly being cleared by residents, litter picking groups and the council. And 19 members of the youth group from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met on Wednesday evening to tackle the issue. The group were able to collect 16 bags of litter, and are now encouraging local people to take responsibility. Rachel Smith, Communications Director for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said:

"We targeted the area that runs behind the school along to the iron railway bridge and nearby woodland and managed to collect 16 bags of rubbish! Unfortunately this area has a constant litter issue even after being regularly cleared by locals, litter picking groups and the council. "We had 19 of our youth in attendance along with leaders and two missionaries, Elder Karino from Japan and Elder Gargalis from California, who have both given up two years of their lives to come and serve in England. "We live in such a beautiful part of the world, and all have a responsibility to look after the place we call home. We can each make a difference as we take our rubbish home or just put it in a bin."
Rachel was also impressed by the attitude of the group and their willingness to help out in the local community. She added:
"One of the group, Lily Kimberling from St Aidans school, told me that she was excited to do the litter picking and had been wanting to do a service project for one of their youth activities for a long time. "It was so wonderful to see how happy and enthusiastic all of the group were to be doing good in the community. They all enjoyed working together and making a difference and are looking forward to our next one!"
