Harrogate community raise £10,000 to save artificial pitch

The artificial pitch at Rossett Sports Centre in Harrogate has been saved thanks to a £10,000 fundraising campaign.

The artificial pitch at Rossett Sports Centre in Harrogate has been saved thanks to a £10,000 fundraising campaign. The facility, which is used by more than 1,000 local sports players each week, is in desperate need of resurfacing and is expected to be unplayable by Winter. But thanks to the support of the Harrogate community and 72 donations, the fundraising target has been met and Rossett Sports Centre will soon be able to carry out the necessary repairs. The project will see the current surface replaced with a Tiger Turf Atomic Pro 3G synthetic turf, an FA-approved surface that meets all football regulations.

Josh Lyon, Manager at Rossett Sports Centre, said:

"A massive thank you for your support in helping us reach our £10,000 target. This money is going directly towards the 3G pitch replacement project, which is £160,000 in total.

"Works on the new pitch is imminently commencing and the new state of the art facility should be back open to the local community in late June. Your support is massively appreciated by Rossett and your local sporting community."

The current pitch is 11 years old and was due to be re-laid last year - but the impact of the pandemic scuppered plans. The sports centre had also been forced to close for most of the last 12 months and has suffered a substantial shortfall in income as a result. Run by Rossett School, the sports centre on Pannal Ash Road is open to the public outside of school hours, seven days a week. Head of PE at Rossett School Kat Fairbairn said:
"The 3G pitch is the most essential and important cog in the running of the Sports Studies faculty. It provides many opportunities to the students of Rossett School and has meant that we can offer a very diverse and rich curriculum."
The full-sized 3G pitch is used regularly by six senior and eight junior football clubs, including more than 300 boys and girls from Beckwithshaw Saints FC under a community partnership arrangement. It’s also used by the Harrogate Gateway Disability Group, Harrogate Town Youth Development Programme and 25 recreational groups.
