Today marks a major milestone in the coronavirus vaccine rollout in the Harrogate district, with the 100,000th jab being given out. A network of 17 GP surgeries, which stretches from Masham to Pateley Bridge to Green Hammerton, as well as covering Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon, have worked together to achieve the goal. They've set up vaccination centres at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate and at Ripon Racecourse. Dr Cath Dixon, a GP in Knaresborough and the medical director of the Yorkshire Health Network, said:
"It's been a real team effort, between the doctors and managers at some of the surgeries, and some administrators as well, and we're really proud that this week we've reached giving 100,000 vaccinations in the GP-led vaccination sites in Harrogate and Ripon. "I remember the very first set of vaccines arriving actually, and we were sitting waiting at the Yorkshire Events Centre. The cleaner came past and said 'oh yeah, they've delivered your vaccine, it's in the fridge'. It was 975 doses so we were expecting a big box, and we went in there and saw a box about 15cm by 15cm, and we just looked at it in this massive fridge. "It was an absolute privilege to be the duty doctor there on the first day and see the emotions of the people arriving. Some people had been squirreled away, hibernating for 9 months, and it was their first time coming out and it was such a privilege to be a human being with them and offer them this vaccination. "When you get that text message, when you get that letter, please book for your vaccination. The more people that we can get vaccinated the better. Many people do feel mild side effects after their vaccination, including a mild temperature or headache after it, but they'll settle within 24-48 hours, that's your immune system rising to the vaccine."
