Cricket pavilion destroyed by fire at Studley Royal

A cricket pavilion in the grounds of Studley Royal has been completely destroyed by fire.

The Deer Park pavilion, home to Studley Royal Cricket Club’s senior and junior teams, was lost in a blaze on Sunday afternoon.

The building is believed to date back to the post-war period, when estate workers played cricket at the ground.

It later became the home of Studley Royal Cricket Club and a familiar part of the Nidderdale cricket community.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although the club believes it may have been started deliberately.

A spokesperson said:

“We know the loss will be felt by past players, as well as our current senior and junior players who call the Deer Park ground their cricketing home.

“At this time we are appealing to anyone who may have seen any activity or vehicles at the ground on Sunday 30th August between the hours of 4.30pm and 5.30pm.

“We need as much information as possible, even if it is the smallest thing.”

Anyone with information is being asked to contact the police or Studley Royal Cricket Club.

The club said it now faces “lots of work” to fund a replacement pavilion and will need the support of the local community.
